I’ll Be Speaking at the ALA Conference in Chicago

chicago_speakingCome say hello to me and 17 other children’s writers at the ALA conference in Chicago on July 12th.

Although my two most recent books for children are historical novels, I’ll be part of a panel of writers talking about nonfiction for children.

Here’s the scoop:

Nonfiction Book Blast: Booktalks for Reluctant Readers
Sunday, July 12, 2009
Convention Center Room W181

reluctant readers are often more drawn to reading nonfiction. Expand

Panelists include award-winning and acclaimed authors April Pulley

Write a Middle Grade or YA Novel Yourself This Summer!

chapter 1 As a former teacher, I’m still in the habit of using the summer to rev up my writing. And, this summer I’m helping other children’s writers do the same thing with the Writing for Children Track of my Working Writer’s Summer Bootcamp.

Our first teleclass is this evening at 7:30 CDT. During the next 13 weeks each member of bootcamp will be writing their own middle grade or YA novel with my help. In addition to writing 22 (at last count) published books of my own, I was an instructor for the Institute of Children’s Literature for many years, which taught ME a lot about critiquing manuscripts and plotting and writing my own books for kids.

It’s not too late for register for bootcamp and join us for the first weekly teleclass tonight. You’ll also get your writing assignment for the week.
